Carl S El-Tobgui is an Associate Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies and Director of the Arabic Language Program at Brandeis University, affiliated with the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies within the School of Arts and Sciences. He also serves as Chair of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. His expertise spans Islamic thought, theology, law, and classical Arabic language.
Education:
- B.S. in Arabic Language, Georgetown University
- M.A. and Ph.D. in Islamic Studies, McGill University
Research Interests: Focuses on the interplay between reason and revelation in Islamic tradition, classical jurisprudence, Qur'anic exegesis, and Arabic grammar/literature. His monograph on Ibn Taymiyya's work explores these themes extensively.
Teaching Experience: Former Preceptor of Arabic at Harvard University and instructor at Middlebury College Summer Arabic Language School.
Advising & Leadership: Oversees the Arabic Language Program and leads departmental administration. Engages students in exploring classical Arabic texts and theological discourse.
