Carl Nathan is a Professor of Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he serves as Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. His lab at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences focuses on host-pathogen interactions, particularly with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), and extends to drug development for TB, malaria, and inflammatory disorders. He has held prominent leadership roles, including founding director of the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, acting dean of Weill Cornell Medical College, and dean of the Graduate School.
- Education: Harvard College, Harvard Medical School, internal medicine and oncology training at Massachusetts General Hospital, National Cancer Institute, and Yale.
- Collaborations: Sabine Ehrt, Dirk Schnappinger, Kyu Rhee (Weill Cornell), Jeremy Rock (Rockefeller), Michael Glickman (MSKCC), and the Gates Foundation’s TB Drug Accelerator.
Research Interests: Nathan’s work spans innate immunity, macrophage biology, and Mtb’s mechanisms of survival in non-replicating states. His lab investigates enzymes like lipoamide dehydrogenase and phosphopantetheinyl transferase as drug targets, alongside proteostasis pathways in bacteria and immune cells. Projects emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, integrating immunology, biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.
Scientific Contributions: His lab pioneered the discovery of Mtb proteasome inhibitors and demonstrated interferon-gamma’s role in human macrophage activation. Key findings include cytokine-mediated macrophage deactivation, ROI/RNI effector systems, and Mtb’s UvrDNA repair pathways.
- Awards: National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, Koch Prize, Sanofi-Institut Pasteur Senior International Scientist Award.
- Editorial Roles: Co-chair of the Journal of Experimental Medicine, board member of PNAS and Science Translational Medicine.
Lab & Team: The Nathan Lab collaborates with multiple institutions and hosts trainees from immunology, microbiology, and chemistry backgrounds. The Global Health Floor in the Belfer Building includes labs of Sabine Ehrt, Dirk Schnappinger, and others, fostering a multi-disciplinary environment.
