Carl Harrington is an Associate Professor and Widening Participation Academic Lead in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). He holds roles as Deputy Admissions Director and co-leads initiatives like the Access and Participation Plan across the Faculty of Science. His work focuses on supporting underrepresented groups in education, both pre-university and during their studies at UEA.
Research interests include Widening Participation, Social Mobility in STEM, and science communication. Key projects involve outreach programs such as Bringing Scientists To You and Biology Unlocked, as well as supporting current students through initiatives like the Biology Students of Colour project and Wellcome Trust Scholarships.
Teaching spans microbiology, molecular biology, and science communication across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also trains staff and students in school engagement activities.
Recent recognition includes the 2024 European First Year Experience Team Award. His work bridges academic research, teaching, and community outreach to enhance inclusivity in science education.
