Ms Cariona Flaherty is the Interim Head of Nursing and Midwifery at Middlesex University, holding a Senior Lecturer academic rank. She has been affiliated with the university since 2015, progressing from Lecturer (2015–2019) to Senior Lecturer (2019–2022). Prior to academia, she worked clinically as a Band 7 Lead Clinical Practice Educator in Intensive Care at the Royal Free NHS Trust (2014–2016). Her expertise spans critical care nursing, nursing education innovation, and pedagogical development.
Education: Registered Adult Nurse (2009), Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCERT HE), and ongoing doctoral research on critical thinking in nurse education. She is a Senior Teaching Fellow with the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and chairs nursing accreditation processes.
Research focuses on integrating virtual/augmented reality in nursing education, academic skills development for nursing associates, and evaluating hybrid online teaching models. She leads modules like Professional Nurse Advocate and supervises MSc students. Key contributions include establishing postgraduate critical care courses and co-authoring multiple textbooks on nursing associate training and acute patient management.
