Carina Ren is an Associate Professor at Aalborg University, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Learning and serving as Head of AAU Arctic. She holds roles in multiple labs and units, including The Techno-Anthropology Lab, AAU Arctic Green Societies, Tourism Research Unit (TRU), and BLUE – Marine & Maritime Research. Her research focuses on Arctic tourism development, sustainable practices, and governance in collaboration with industry and government actors.
She has led and participated in over 20+ projects, including initiatives like 'Destination South Greenland: Towards Sustainable Tourism Development' and 'Nordic Regenerative Tourism'. Her work emphasizes innovative methodologies such as ethnography, digital tools, and design approaches to explore tourism’s role in urban/rural development, branding, and mega-events.
Key research areas include adaptive governance in Arctic regions, regenerative tourism, and the intersection of climate change and tourism in Greenland and Svalbard. Her recent publications (2023–2025) address topics like Arctic cruise sustainability, governance infrastructure, and cross-regional climate justice.
Ren has received notable awards such as the Ziman Award 2020 and has been active in editorial roles (e.g., Frontiers in Climate). Her contributions span peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and media engagements, reflecting her commitment to bridging academic and practical applications in tourism.
