Carin Franzén is a Professor of Comparative Literature at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University since 2020. Previously, she held a Professorship in Language and Culture at Linköping University. Her research focuses on the history of subjectivity in premodern and modern European literature, employing psychoanalytic criticism, gender studies, and discourse theory. Key areas include medieval female writers (e.g., Christine de Pizan), French moralist discourse, and the interplay between libertinism and early modern subjectivity. She leads two current projects: Another Humanism: Gendering Early Modern Libertinism and Freethinking, Hesitation, Weirdness: Reconsidering the Anthropocene. Active in research groups like Forum Modernism and Cultural Memory Studies, her work bridges literary history with contemporary debates in posthumanism and ecological humanities. Recent publications address topics such as cultural memory, Kristeva’s philosophy, and the literary legacy of Queen Christina.
As part of her academic contributions, Franzén has published extensively on premodern texts and modernist thought. Her research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, connecting historical literary analysis to contemporary societal issues. She is affiliated with Stockholm University’s institutional framework, contributing to both teaching and scholarly discourse in comparative literature and cultural studies.
