Cara Elizabeth Furman is an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at Hunter College since Spring 2024, previously serving as an Associate Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Maine at Farmington (2014–2023). Her work bridges philosophy of education and practical teacher inquiry, focusing on ethical development, descriptive inquiry, and asset-based inclusive practices.
- Education: PhD in Philosophy of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University (2014).
Her research interrogates how posthumanist and antiracist frameworks can be operationalized through descriptive review practices to disrupt oppressive pedagogical habits. Her 2024 book Teaching from an Ethical Center and 2021 co-authored Descriptive Inquiry in Teacher Practice exemplify this approach.
Current projects include podcasts like Teaching from an Ethical Center and Thinking in the Midst, which facilitate dialogues on democratic education and ethical classroom practices.
