Professor Cara Beal is the Director of the Griffith Institute for Human and Environmental Resilience (GIHER) and a Professor in the School of Environment and Science at Griffith University. With over 30 years of experience in the water and sustainability sector, she applies systems thinking and transdisciplinary approaches to address complex environmental challenges. She is also a member of the Australian Rivers Institute and identifies as a 'pracademic'—bridging theory and practice in environmental research.
- Director, Griffith Institute for Human and Environmental Resilience (2025-present)
- Professor, School of Environment and Science (2025-present)
- Former Director, Cities Research Institute (2016-2024)
- Associate Professor, School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences (2020-2023)
- Principal Research Fellow, School of Engineering and Built Environment (2009-present)
Professor Beal's research focuses on environmental health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' environmental health, Pacific Island community water management, circular economy of nutrients, climate-resilient water systems, and community engagement approaches. She emphasizes transdisciplinary methods and community co-design, particularly in Indigenous contexts. Her work strongly incorporates Indigenous knowledge systems while respecting that, as a non-Indigenous researcher, she does not speak on behalf of First Nations people but works in partnership with communities.
Her recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on circular nutrient systems, sustainable fertilizer production from waste streams, renewable energy for off-grid communities, and water management in Pacific Island nations. These works reflect her commitment to practical, community-centered solutions to environmental challenges with an emphasis on equity and sustainability.
- Pro Vice Chancellors Research Excellence Awards - Excellence of a Research Group or Team (2018)
- Winner Best Paper/Presentation (2018)
- Finalist for Research Innovation Award (2017)
- Winner - Rural & Remote ICT and Life Sciences Award (2016)
- Mid-Career Accelerate Fellowship (2014)
Professor Beal has attracted over $7 million in external research funding as Chief Investigator, including significant ARC grants. She currently supervises multiple PhD students working on water and renewable energy management in Indigenous communities, public health, Indigenous data sovereignty, and circular economy approaches. She leads projects under the Climate Action Beacon for digital technologies in improving climate-impacted water systems and has extensive experience in First Peoples' community water and energy research.
She directs the Griffith Institute for Human and Environmental Resilience, which serves as her primary research platform. The institute focuses on building resilience in human and environmental systems, particularly through community-centered approaches and innovative technological solutions. Professor Beal's work strongly emphasizes the integration of traditional knowledge with scientific approaches to create sustainable and culturally appropriate solutions.
