Candace A. Oviatt is a Professor in Biological Oceanography at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. Her research focuses on coastal and estuarine health, biogeochemical cycling, and climate change impacts on Narragansett Bay. She has contributed to understanding nutrient reduction effects, hypoxia, and long-term ecological changes in temperate coastal waters.
- Education: Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography (University of Rhode Island, 1967), B.S. in Biology (Bates College, 1961)
Oviatt’s work spans decades of monitoring Narragansett Bay, documenting improvements in water quality after sewage treatment upgrades and studying climate oscillations affecting marine ecosystems. She emphasizes interdisciplinary research, integrating primary production analysis, benthic-pelagic coupling, and marine nitrogen cycling.
Her recent studies highlight the interplay between reduced nutrient inputs and hypoxia dynamics, with implications for fisheries and aquaculture. Collaborations include partnerships with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Narragansett Bay Commission.
