James Ammerman is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), Stony Brook University, and serves as Science Coordinator for the USEPA Long Island Sound Study and the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC). He holds a Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego (1983). His research focuses on phosphorus biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, and coastal hypoxia, particularly in estuaries like the Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay. Notably, his 2006 study demonstrated phosphorus limitation's role in the Gulf's 'dead zone,' influencing the 2008 Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan.
Research interests include phosphorus cycling in marine ecosystems, microbial phosphorus assimilation, and the development of automated tools for nutrient analysis. Awards include AAAS Fellowship (1996) and the Lindeman Award (1986). Key contributions span nutrient dynamics in eutrophic systems, instrument innovation, and academic leadership in environmental science.

Publications emphasize phosphorus limitation in coastal zones, hypoxia mechanisms, and microbial enzyme activity. Recent work addresses urban estuary management and nutrient reduction strategies in Long Island Sound.
