Nancy Rabalais is Professor and Shell Endowed Chair in Oceanography and Wetland Studies at Louisiana State University's Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences. Her groundbreaking research examines coastal hypoxia, eutrophication, and ecosystem changes in the Gulf of Mexico, with emphasis on human impacts and science policy implications.
Education includes a B.S. in Biology from Texas A&I University (1972), M.S. in Biology from Texas A&I (1975), and Ph.D. in Zoology from University of Texas at Austin (1983).
Rabalais' publications reveal consistent focus on hypoxia mechanisms, wetland restoration, and climate-ocean interactions. Recent work integrates microbial ecology with biogeochemical cycling in hypoxic zones. Her corpus demonstrates exceptional longitudinal analysis of Gulf ecosystems.
Awards include the MacArthur Fellowship (2012), Heinz Award (2011), and LSU's SEC Faculty Achievement Award (2023).
