Camille Shira Angel is an Adjunct Professor in the Swig Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice at the University of San Francisco, serving part-time while balancing her role as an ordained rabbi. She previously served as spiritual leader of Congregation Sha'ar Zahav (2000-2015), a queer flagship congregation, where she co-edited their radically inclusive prayer book Siddur Sha'ar Zahav.
Her academic work focuses on queer theology, liturgical innovation, and Jewish perspectives on sexuality. Key publications include contributions to The Sacred Encounter and Torah Queeries, exploring topics like gendered spirituality and inclusive religious practices. Her research integrates personal, communal, and global justice imperatives with traditional religious frameworks.
Dr. Angel emphasizes intersectional justice advocacy in her scholarship and spiritual leadership, while prioritizing familial roles as a mother and partner. Her writing bridges progressive religious thought with contemporary social movements, challenging traditional boundaries in Jewish practice.
