Camilla Sutherland is an Assistant Professor of European Culture and Literature (Spanish) at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. She specializes in gender studies and Latin American modernism, focusing on how women artists and writers constructed identities through spatial practices. Her recent monograph, The Space of Latin American Women Modernists, examines works by figures like Frida Kahlo and lesser-known artists such as Marina Núñez del Prado. She co-directs the Mexico Study Centre and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Mistral: Journal of Latin American Women's Intellectual & Cultural History.
Research interests include global modernism, interdisciplinary approaches to art and literature, and feminist praxis in cultural production. Her work has appeared in journals like World Art and Modernism/modernity, and she edited the Latin American section of Global Modernists on Modernism (Bloomsbury, 2020). Teaching responsibilities span courses on Latin American culture, European modernism, and representations of marginality.
Her research highlights underrepresented voices in modernist discourse, blending literary and visual analysis. Recent projects explore transnational networks in modernist periodicals and the intersection of gender with spatial and cultural practices. She actively contributes to academic editing and intellectual history initiatives focused on Latin American women's cultural heritage.
