James Oles is a Senior Lecturer in the Art Department at Wellesley College, specializing in Latin American art with a focus on modern Mexican art and architecture through museum and academic projects. He also serves as Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art at the Davis Museum.
- Education: B.A. and Ph.D. in Art History from Yale University; LL.D. from the University of Virginia.
His research spans diverse topics including U.S.-Mexican cultural interchange, Mexican surrealism, 1930s political prints, art-deco architecture in Argentina, and Frida Kahlo's contested legacy. Recent curatorial projects include Diego Rivera's America (2022-2023) and the upcoming Mexichrome: Color and Photography in Mexico (2023).
He teaches a comprehensive survey of Mexican art from ancient to modern eras and seminars on public art, cinema representation, and exhibition theory. His work emphasizes critical visual analysis and rigorous academic writing, mentoring four students who pursued Ph.D.s in Latin American art.
Current initiatives involve advising the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on a 2025 Frida Kahlo exhibition and advancing his book project Diego Rivera's Heroes.
