Camilla Serck-Hanssen is a Professor at the University of Oslo's Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas. Since August 2018, she has been on leave serving as Scientific Director at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (CAS), a position concluding in August 2025. Her primary research focuses on the history of philosophy (1600–1800), particularly Kant, and has expanded into military ethics and conceptual engineering. She co-led the 'Conceptual Engineering' project (funded by the Norwegian Research Council) and co-founded ConceptLab. Serck-Hanssen holds leadership roles including President of the Norwegian Kant Society and former Co-editor of Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie. She has served on numerous academic and ethical boards, including the Norwegian Press Complaints Commission and the Ethical Council for the Defence sector.
Her education includes a PhD from UC San Diego (1996) under Henry E. Allison, focusing on Kant's apperception concept. Her research bridges historical philosophy with contemporary issues like conceptual engineering and war ethics, as seen in works such as Conceptual Engineering and contributions to military ethics debates. She has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects like 'Disclosing the Fabric of Reality' (Center for Advanced Study). Notably, she has engaged in public policy roles, including Vice President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and Head of the Portfolio Board for Social Sciences and Humanities at the Research Council of Norway.
Her publications span Kantian analysis, metaphysical debates, and applied ethics. She has authored and edited volumes on Kant's schematism, metaphysics, and ethical dilemmas in counterterrorism. Her work emphasizes philosophical methodology and the historical grounding of contemporary ethical frameworks.
