Dr. Calvin Tiengwe is a Lecturer at Imperial College London's Department of Life Sciences within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of iron homeostasis in Trypanosoma brucei, linking host-pathogen interactions to disease outcomes and drug resistance. He leads the SMART Livestock project addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock, emphasizing the One Health framework to integrate human, animal, and environmental health.
Dr. Tiengwe holds a PhD in Molecular Parasitology from the University of Glasgow. His expertise spans microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry. He directs the Tiengwe Lab, which explores iron regulation in pathogens and collaborates internationally to build research capacity in West Africa. His current funding includes a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust and Royal Society.
Research interests include:
- Iron metabolism in pathogens and host-parasite interactions
- Antimicrobial resistance surveillance in livestock
- Global health strategies for neglected tropical diseases
- North-South partnerships for sustainable solutions
His work bridges laboratory science with field applications, aiming to improve infectious disease control and food security through interdisciplinary approaches. Key affiliations include the Membrane Receptor Network and Imperial College's Infection and Immunity program.
