Calvin Gidney is an Associate Professor in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study & Human Development at Tufts University, part of the School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD and MS in Linguistics from Georgetown University (1995) and a BA in Russian and Soviet Studies from Harvard University (1983). His research focuses on linguistics, literacy, sociolinguistic development, dyslexia in African-American children, language in children’s cartoons, and children’s name-calling.
He has received grants including the America's Promise Alliance Doctoral Research Assistant Funding (2015–2016) and the Schott Foundation's Gender Equity in Model Sites Initiative (2003–2006). His teaching spans courses like Child Study & Human Development, Children's Television Project, and Directed Research.
Key publications include studies on media representation in children’s TV, sociolinguistic methods in cartoons, and dyslexia research. Gidney’s work bridges linguistics, media studies, and child development, emphasizing cultural diversity and educational impact.
