Callum Morton is a Professor in the Department of Fine Art at Monash University, where he serves as Head of Fine Art within the Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) faculty. He is the founding Director of Monash Art Projects (MAP), a research lab dedicated to artist-led public art across Australia. His career bridges academic leadership and a highly active artistic practice in contemporary and public art.
Education:
- MFA, Fine Art, RMIT University (1999)
- BFA, Painting, Victoria College, Melbourne
- Bachelor of Architecture, RMIT, Melbourne
Morton’s research and artistic practice centers on the intersection of architecture, urban space, and social memory. His work critically examines modernist architecture, public monuments, and the transformation of urban environments, often using irony, melancholy, and speculative reconstruction to question how built environments shape everyday life. Key themes include absence, history, and the commodification of space. His installations frequently mimic architectural forms—such as motels, monuments, and retail franchises—to explore cultural narratives embedded in the built world.
His body of work from the past decade reflects a sustained engagement with public commissions and large-scale installations. These include Hotel (2008), Grotto (2009), and Monument Park (2014), culminating in recent projects like The Underneath (2024) for Sydney Metro and upcoming commissions for Western Sydney International Airport. His artworks blend conceptual depth with architectural precision, often functioning as both aesthetic objects and critical commentary.
