Research Focus
Dr. Burt’s research unravels the biopsychosocial mechanisms through which socioeconomic and racial disparities influence crime and health-risk behaviors. She investigates impulsivity and sensation-seeking during adolescence—treating this developmental window as a sensitive period open to both vulnerability and intervention. Her NIH-funded K01 award (NICHD, 2018-2023) integrates genomics and epigenetics to examine how social experiences become biologically embedded.
She also critically examines sex and gender differences, interrogating how law and social policy reflect or challenge these distinctions, as evidenced in her recent Feminist Criminology article on the U.S. Equality Act.
Scientific Recognition
- Ruth Shonle Cavan Young Scholar Award, American Society of Criminology (2014)
Grants & Advising
Dr. Burt is the Principal Investigator on an NICHD K01 Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (2018-2023) that supports advanced training in genomics and biostatistics for life-course criminological research.
