Caitlin Cherry is an Adjunct Professor in the Fine Arts Department at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. She holds an MFA from Columbia University (2012) and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2010). Her interdisciplinary practice merges painting, sculpture, and installation to address themes of cultural reclamation, structural oppression, and the intersection of race, gender, and technology. Cherry’s work critiques dominant narratives through a lens of contemporary theory, examining how identity is shaped by societal and technological forces.
Her research interests include posthumanism, digital abstraction, and the representation of Black femininity, often blending art historical traditions with modern media. Notable achievements include solo exhibitions at Luis De Jesus Los Angeles, The Hole, and VCU Anderson Gallery, alongside group shows at The Brooklyn Museum and Banksy’s Dismaland. Awards include the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Fellowship (2016) and Leonore Annenberg Fellowship (2015). Her paintings are in collections like the Pizzuti Collection, Columbus, OH.
Cherry’s recent works, such as those in the 2020 exhibitions Corps Sonore and ILLUMINATION, explore themes of digital identity and marginalized voices, particularly Black femmes in popular culture. Collaborations like A Wild Ass Beyond: ApocalypseRN (2018) reflect her interest in dystopian futures and communal resilience.
