CHENG Chi-Ying is an Associate Professor of Psychology and IRB Chair at Singapore Management University’s School of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on identity integration across multiple social identities, including cultural, racial, and professional domains, with a recent emphasis on Singapore’s Kiasu (Fear of Losing Out) mindset. She holds a PhD in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan (2005) and has published in top-tier journals like Psychological Science and PNAS.
Her academic roles include Associate Editor of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology and editorial board membership at the Journal of International Business Studies.
Research interests span biculturalism, multicultural creativity, cross-cultural negotiation, and gender identity integration. Notable projects investigate how identity integration enhances creativity and well-being, and how Kiasu mindset influences Singaporean society. She has advised multiple graduate students and teaches courses in cultural psychology, I/O psychology, and self-identity.
Awards include the Lee Kong Chian Fellowship (2022-23). Her work bridges organizational behavior and social psychology, addressing both theoretical and applied questions about cultural diversity management and identity dynamics in global contexts.
