C.V. Ramamoorthy

C.V. Ramamoorthy is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, a position held since 1972. He concurrently serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the ICC Institute of the University of Texas, Austin. His education includes undergraduate degrees in physics and textile technology (University of Madras), graduate degrees in mechanical engineering (UC Berkeley), and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Harvard University (1964).

Ramamoorthy's research spans:

• Parallel/Distributed Systems: Parallelism extraction, scheduling strategies, pipeline architectures, and network protocol synthesis.
• Hardware/Software Integration: Memory hierarchy design, micro-diagnostics, and automated simulation systems.
• Applied Engineering: Bridging software engineering with service industries; developed FACES system for missile/shuttle testing.

He received major honors including:

• IEEE Taylor L. Booth Education Award (1989)
• Richard E. Merwin Award (1993)
• IEEE Centennial/Third Millennium Medals
• R.T. YEH Distinguished Achievement Award (1997)

Ramamoorthy advised 73 Ph.D. students, many becoming academic leaders (Deans, VC) or industry executives (CEOs, IEEE Presidents).
