C.-C. Jay Kuo

Dr. C.-C. Jay Kuo serves as the William M. Hogue Professor and USC Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California, with a joint appointment in Computer Science. He directs the USC Multimedia Communication Laboratory (MCL) and maintains active roles in research, teaching, and academic leadership.

His educational background includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University (1980) and M.S./Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT (1985, 1987). Prior to joining USC in 1989, he held a Computational and Applied Mathematics Research Assistant Professor position at UCLA (1987-1988).

Dr. Kuo's pioneering research spans multimedia communication, green computing, signal processing, and sustainable AI systems. His work focuses on developing interpretable artificial intelligence frameworks and sustainable healthcare technologies, evidenced by 350+ journal papers, 1,000+ conference papers, 30 patents, and 15 books. He has delivered 40 keynote speeches and 750+ invited lectures globally.

His exceptional contributions have earned numerous prestigious recognitions:

As an educator, Dr. Kuo has mentored 170 Ph.D. students and 31 postdoctoral fellows, ranking him as the top advisor in the Mathematics Genealogy Project. His editorial leadership includes Editor-in-Chief roles for IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security (2012-2014) and Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation (1997-2011), along with service on multiple IEEE editorial boards.

The USC Multimedia Communication Laboratory under his direction drives innovation in multimedia processing and sustainable computing. His current research agenda emphasizes sustainable AI frameworks and healthcare technology solutions, as reflected in his recent lecture series on interpretable AI systems and healthcare sustainability.
