Byungsam Jung is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Syracuse University. His expertise spans 19th- and 20th-century Russian literature and culture, with a focus on material culture, visual studies, photojournalism, and the intersection of art and protest. He holds a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Stanford University (2023), an M.A. and B.A. in Russian Language and Literature from Yonsei University (2014, 2008).
Research interests include photojournalism in Russia, narratology, anthroposophy’s influence on avant-garde movements, and Yiddish/Korean writers in the Soviet Union. He emphasizes connections between material/visual culture and literary works.
Jung received the Centennial Teaching Award from Stanford University (2023). His recent academic contributions include presentations on Russian street art, Viktor Fink’s plays, and Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin’s poetry. He organized the 50th-anniversary Global Film Series for his department (2024).
Teaching includes Russian language courses (beginner to advanced) and specialized topics like 'Art and Protest in Russia' and 'Photojournalism in Russia.' He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, blending literature with visual and cultural studies.
