D. Brian Kim is an Assistant Professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. He specializes in Russian literature of the long nineteenth century, translation studies, and literary/cultural relationships between Russia, Western Europe, and East Asia.

Dr. Kim investigates Russian polylingualism in imperial contexts, focusing on literature-education intersections. His current book project explores how foreign languages bridged cultural gaps in imperial Russia. His research spans drama, poetry, philosophical texts, and the sociology of reading.
At Penn, he teaches seminars on Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Russian identity, and the history of reading. His publications include cross-cultural analyses of Russian-Japanese lexicography, Bal’mont’s poetics, and Molière’s influence on Krylov.
