Butch J. Humbert, MD is a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he has served since July 2000. Currently functioning as a full-time clinician educator, he leads development of a new Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the IUH South Central Region and IUSM Bloomington Campus focused on rural and critical access emergency care.
His educational background includes medical school at The Ohio State University and emergency medicine residency training at MetroHealth-Case Western Reserve University Program. Dr. Humbert has held significant leadership roles including Director of the largest emergency medicine clerkship in the US (2001-2012), Assistant Dean for Curriculum in the Clinical Sciences, and Program Director for the Indianapolis Emergency Medicine Residency (2015-2022).
His research interests center on emergency medicine education with specialization in rural healthcare delivery systems and graduate medical education innovation. Current efforts focus on creating sustainable training models for emergency physicians serving critical access hospitals.
Dr. Humbert's teaching excellence has been recognized through multiple awards:
- Outstanding Instructor in Emergency Medicine (IUSM Classes of 2009, 2012, 2013)
- IUSM Trustee Teaching Award (2018)
- Kevin G. Rodgers Program Director of the Year (2019)
In advising and program development, he maintains an active role in shaping emergency medicine education nationally. His current project securing ACGME accreditation for the Bloomington-based rural residency program demonstrates ongoing commitment to expanding emergency care capacity in underserved regions through structured graduate medical education.
Dr. Humbert is building the foundational infrastructure for the new residency program, which will train physicians specifically for rural emergency department settings across Indiana's critical access hospitals.
