Bryon Black is an Assistant Professor of Music at DePauw University specializing in choral conducting with a focus on the intersections between gospel music and European choral traditions. He directs multiple ensembles including Chamber Singers, Vox Animae, and the Putnam County Festival Choir.
Dr. Black's research explores the rich connections between African American gospel traditions and classical choral forms. His 2024 dissertation examined the works of composers Isaac Cates, Dr. Diane L. White-Clayton, and Dr. Raymond Wise, providing valuable pedagogical guidance for conductors seeking authentic gospel style performance.
His recent creative output includes the 2024 published arrangement 'Hold On Just a Little While Longer' in the Raymond Wise Choral Series, along with three major recordings: 'Lord, Send Your Spirit' (2023), 'In the Spirit! An Encounter with Spirituals' (2023), and 'Walking in Purpose' (2023). His scholarly presentations at venues like the Louisiana American Choral Directors Association and Case Western Reserve University demonstrate his growing influence in the field of Black choral music.
