Dr. Alonza Lawrence is a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Professor of Voice at the University of Illinois. His roles include teaching contemporary vocal performance, Gospel studies, and vocal coaching for the Lyric Theater. He previously served as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University's African-American Choral Ensemble, a music educator in Virginia public schools, and Artistic Director of the Boys Choir of Hampton Roads. His research focuses on bridging Eurocentric and Afrocentric music practices, with specialties in classical and gospel vocal techniques.
Education: Doctorate of Music (DM) and Master of Music (MM) from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music; Bachelor of Music Education (BME) from Norfolk State University.
Teaching includes courses like 'Introduction to Gospel Music Styles' and Voice. He has led community and church choruses, performed with the Virginia Symphony and Virginia Opera, and contributed to the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary 'Amen, Music of the Black Church!'
