Roles and Affiliations: Bryn King is an Associate Professor and Factor-Inwentash Chair in Child Welfare at the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. She also serves as an Affiliated Researcher at the Children’s Data Network (University of Southern California) and the California Child Welfare Indicators Project (UC Berkeley).
Education: Ph.D. in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley; MSW from New York University; BA from Clark University.
Research Interests: Bryn’s work examines child welfare systems, focusing on adolescents and marginalized groups. Key areas include maltreatment outcomes, early parenting among foster youth, racial disparities (especially affecting Black families), and crossover youth (those involved in both child welfare and juvenile justice). Her research emphasizes systemic racism and policy reform.
Grants and Projects: Bryn leads the Youth Wellness Lab, funded by SSHRC (2018–2021) to study young mothers in child welfare. She has secured grants for projects like the ‘Disparity Mapping Project’ (2021–2025) and ‘ACB-FGC Project’ addressing Black Caribbean families. Over 30 grants span topics like child welfare legislation, immigration impacts, and youth employment post-care.
Awards: Recipient of the Early Researcher Award (2018–2023) from Ontario’s Ministry of Research and Innovation.
Labs/Teams: Founder of the Youth Wellness Lab, a collaborative space uniting researchers, practitioners, and youth to improve service outcomes.
