Brycchan Carey is a Professor of Literature, Culture, and History at the Department of Humanities, Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. His research focuses on the literature and culture of the Atlantic world (1650–1850), with expertise in slavery and abolition, colonial America, and natural history. He holds a BSc in Natural Sciences (Open University, 2014), MA (Queen Mary, 1996), and PhD (Queen Mary, 2000) in English Literature. Currently leading a British Academy/Wolfson Foundation-funded project, *The Parish Revolution*, examining clerical contributions to natural history and conservationism.
Prof. Carey’s publications include *The Unnatural Trade* (2024) and *Birds in Eighteenth-Century Literature* (2020). He has held leadership roles in scholarly societies: President of the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (2021–2024), President of ASLE-UKI (2015–2019), and Treasurer of the Literary London Society. A Fellow of the Linnean Society, he also engages in public scholarship via his website and advocacy with Alnwick Area Friends of the Earth.
His interdisciplinary approach bridges history, literature, and environmental studies, with notable work on figures like Gilbert White and early abolitionists. His research underscores the interconnectedness of ecological and social justice movements in historical contexts.
