Dr Richard Johns is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History of Art at the University of York. He holds a BA and PhD from the University of York and an MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art. As Director of the York Art History Collaborations (YAHCs), he leads the British Art research cluster and is a member of the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies.
His research focuses on British art from 1650–1850, with specialties in grand-scale decorative history painting, Wedgwood ceramics, and global connections in modern British art. Recent projects include a book on James Thornhill and exhibitions like Ruskin, Turner and the Storm Cloud. He has curated major shows such as Turner and the Sea and contributed to scholarly works on marine art and naval caricature.
Johns has supervised multiple PhD candidates and contributed to funded projects like the AHRC-funded 'Pantheons.' His teaching spans undergraduate courses on eighteenth-century British painting and postgraduate modules on Turner and landscape art.
