His research focuses on the socio-anthropological analysis of biblical texts, particularly the Hebrew Bible’s Former Prophets. He investigates how identity formation in ancient Near Eastern societies influences biblical authorship and theological interpretation, emphasizing the integration of archaeological and epigraphical data into biblical scholarship.
Fr Clifton’s peer-reviewed articles, such as Discerning the Literal Sense: Bringing Together Biblical Scholarship and Dogmatic Theology (2021) and What if Israel was God's stubborn and rebellious son? (2014), highlight his work on identity dynamics in the Book of Judges and legal hermeneutics in Deuteronomy.
As a Catholic priest and friar of the Dominican Order, he previously served as Master of Novices at Blackfriars Cambridge Dominican Priory of St Michael the Archangel. His forthcoming book Family and Identity in the Book of Judges (Brill) further explores these themes.
