Bruce P. Diehl is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Jazz Performance at Amherst College, where he oversees the Jazz Ensemble, jazz combos, and teaches jazz improvisation, theory, and composition. Previously, he held roles at Smith College (Jazz Performance program director, 2000–2006), Northfield Mount Hermon School (Director of Instrumental Music and Jazz Studies), and institutions like UMASS-Amherst and Clark University. His educational background includes a Master of Music in Jazz Composition and Arranging from UMass Amherst (1995) and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Saxophone Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music (1990).
Diehl’s career spans performance, teaching, and leadership. He has directed festivals such as the NMH Jazz Festival and Western MA Senior District Jazz Ensemble, and coordinates Amherst College’s Jazz@Friedmann Room and McBride ’59 Jazz Commission Series. As a performer, he plays alto and tenor saxophone and collaborates with groups like the Springfield Symphony and Amherst Jazz Orchestra. His work includes the 2014 recording *Bug Juice*, showcasing his composing and arranging skills.
He has taught at summer programs like Jazz in July and Camp Encore/Coda, and remains active as a clinician and adjudicator at festivals. His expertise bridges jazz pedagogy, performance, and ensemble direction, with a focus on nurturing student musicians and advancing jazz education.
