Bruce Michael Spiegelman is the Stanley J. Korsmeyer Professor of Cell Biology and Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He holds dual appointments in Cell Biology and Medicine. His research focuses on energy homeostasis, metabolic diseases, and cancer metabolism. Spiegelman earned his B.S. from the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Princeton University, followed by postdoctoral training at MIT. He has been a faculty member since 1982.
His research investigates adipogenesis, muscle biology, and the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cancer cell growth suppression through metabolic pathways. Key contributions include discoveries in PGC-1α signaling, irisin hormone functions, and brown fat thermogenesis. Spiegelman leads multiple NIH-funded grants exploring adipose metabolism and metabolic pathways.
Major awards include membership in the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, and EMBO. His lab collaborates widely, with over 377 publications. Current projects include studying ergothioneine’s role in mitochondrial function and RBM43’s regulation of PGC1α translation.
