Bruce M. Spiegelman is the Stanley J. Korsmeyer Professor of Cell Biology and Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a researcher at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He joined DFCI in 1982 and was promoted to Professor in 1991. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying cellular metabolism, obesity, diabetes, and cancer metabolism, with a particular emphasis on adipose tissue development and energy balance.
Education: PhD in Biochemistry from Princeton University (1978), postdoctoral training at MIT.
Research Interests: Combines basic science and clinical approaches to identify therapeutic targets for metabolic disorders. Current projects explore genetic factors in obesity, mitochondrial energy regulation, and translational applications for diabetes treatment. His lab also investigates links between metabolism and cancer biology.
Scientific Awards: Recipient of prestigious honors including the Heinrich Wieland Prize (1997), NIH MERIT Award (1997), and Albert Renold Award (2021) for mentorship in diabetes research. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences (2002) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2002).
Advising & Grants: Noted for mentorship of junior scientists, as highlighted by the Albert Renold Award. His work has received sustained NIH funding, including MERIT Award support.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Spiegelman Laboratory at Dana-Farber, which uses cutting-edge tools like CRISPR and metabolomics to study metabolic pathways. Collaborates with Harvard Medical School and DFCI teams on translational research initiatives.
