Bruce Lenthall is an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of History and serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. He advises on educational initiatives for the Vice Provost for Education. Lenthall holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania (1999) and a B.A. from Carleton College. His research focuses on 20th-century U.S. cultural, political, and media history, with a particular emphasis on radio's role in shaping mass culture during the Great Depression.
Before joining Penn, he taught at Bryn Mawr College and Barnard College. His notable work includes Radio's America: The Great Depression and the Rise of Modern Mass Culture (2007), examining radio's cultural impact. His publications span media history, cultural criticism, and the intersection of technology with societal change.
His articles explore topics like radio's civic ambition in the 1930s, urban public speaking, science on early TV/radio, and race representation in media. Lenthall’s scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary educational initiatives, reflecting his dual role as an academic and institutional leader.
