Nathan Godfried is an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Maine, specializing in 20th-century American history with a focus on mass communication, labor history, and film history. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His research explores intersections between labor movements, media, and cultural politics, with notable work on Cold War-era broadcasting, leftist journalists, and labor-sponsored media.
Godfried’s publications span academic journals and edited volumes, analyzing topics such as labor radio stations (e.g., WEVD in the 1930s), Cold War-era leftist media strategies, and labor’s use of television. His book WCFL, Chicago’s Voice of Labor, 1926-1978 (1997) examines labor radio’s role in shaping working-class identity. He has also contributed to projects on transnational labor movements and the Popular Front.
His research has earned recognition, including the 2002 Cathy Covert Award for Struggling over Politics and Culture: Organized Labor and Radio Station WEVD During the 1930s. Godfried’s teaching includes undergraduate courses on U.S. political and social developments and graduate seminars on American political history and popular culture.
Current projects include "Fellow Travelers of the Air, 1940-1960", studying leftist journalists and broadcasters during the Cold War, and research on labor intellectual networks in the 1930s.
