John Stoner is a Teaching Professor and Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh's Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD from Columbia University (2001) with a dissertation on American labor's foreign policy in Cold War Africa. His research focuses on transnational labor history, U.S. foreign relations, and South African decolonization. He has held academic positions at institutions including Binghamton University and Union College.
Research interests include Cold War-era U.S. labor diplomacy in Africa, the role of the United States Information Agency in Africa, and comparative labor movements. He advises over 50 graduate students and has authored/co-authored major works like Neither Solidarity nor Subversion and The 1950s. Awards include a Fulbright Scholarship (1992) and multiple research grants.
