Bruce L. Miller, MD, is the A.W. and Mary Margaret Clausen Distinguished Professor of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He directs the UCSF Memory and Aging Center and serves as a director of the Global Brain Health Institute. Dr. Miller is also the principal investigator of the NIH-sponsored Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and leads multiple research initiatives focused on frontotemporal dementia.
Dr. Miller's research focuses on behavioral neurology, particularly the underlying mechanisms of neurocognitive disorders. He is a world-renowned expert in diagnosing and managing dementia, with significant contributions to differentiating Alzheimer's disease from frontotemporal dementia. His work has improved understanding of behavioral, language, and emotional changes in aging and neurodegenerative conditions. He has pioneered innovative care coordination approaches for dementia patients and caregivers, and oversees studies on healthy aging and an artist-in-residence program emphasizing positive aspects of aging.
Dr. Miller's recent publications reveal a strong focus on biomarker development, genetic contributions to dementia across diverse populations, advanced neuroimaging techniques, and digital assessment tools for neurodegenerative diseases. His work spans molecular mechanisms of tau pathology, global health disparities in dementia, and innovative approaches to diagnosing and tracking disease progression.
- Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award (UCSF, 2019)
- The Lloyd Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service to the School of Medicine (2017)
- Elected Member, National Academy of Medicine (2016)
- Potamkin Prize for Research in Pick's, Alzheimer's, and Related Diseases (American Academy of Neurology, 2010)
- Elliot Royer Award for Excellence in Neurology (San Francisco neurological community, 2009)
Dr. Miller has secured substantial research funding through multiple NIH grants, including the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the Frontotemporal Dementia program project grant. He founded the Behavioral Neurology Fellowship at UCSF and oversees visits from more than 50 foreign scholars annually. His leadership extends to the Tau Consortium and the Bluefield Foundation, which focus on developing treatments for tauopathies and progranulin-mediated frontotemporal dementia.
Through the Global Brain Health Institute, which he co-directs, Dr. Miller has fostered international collaborations that have advanced understanding of frontotemporal dementia worldwide. His work bridges basic science, clinical research, and innovative care models, making him a pivotal figure in the neuroscience community.
