Bruce Harrison is a Professor and Department Chair in the Earth & Environmental Science department at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech). His research focuses on soils as environmental recorders, with emphasis on hydrologic processes in arid environments, fault activity assessment via soils, and geoarchaeological applications. He has conducted extensive studies in soil-geomorphic interactions, pedogenic dynamics, and the integration of remote sensing techniques for soil mapping and environmental monitoring.
His work spans international collaborations, including projects in Panama, Hawaii, Ghana, and the Middle East. Key contributions include pioneering methods to use soil properties for dating geological events, analyzing soil moisture dynamics using satellite imagery, and characterizing the role of pedogenic carbonate in semi-arid hydrology. He has advised numerous collaborative research initiatives and contributed to military geoscience applications through soil moisture mapping in conflict zones.
Harrison's research also intersects with Quaternary studies, examining fault slip rates, climatic imprints on soils, and the interplay between flora/fauna and soil hydrology. He has been a keynote speaker at conferences and has organized sessions on soil chronosequences and hydropedology, reflecting his leadership in advancing interdisciplinary earth science methodologies.
