Professor Bruce Gemmell is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tasmania's School of Natural Sciences, affiliated with the CODES ARC research group. He specializes in resource geoscience, geochemistry, and exploration geochemistry with a focus on volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits, epithermal gold systems, and porphyry copper-gold systems.
His research spans decades, with key contributions to understanding VHMS deposits in regions like Myra Falls (Canada), Greens Creek (Alaska), and DeGrussa (Australia). He has supervised over 30 doctoral and master's students, many of whom studied prominent deposits such as the Kelian Gold Mine (Indonesia), Palmarejo Silver-Gold District (Mexico), and Martabe Au-Ag Deposits (Sumatra).
Recent work emphasizes advanced analytical techniques (e.g., portable XRF, LA-ICP-MS) and exploration vectors for porphyry and epithermal systems. He leads projects funded by major mining companies including Hecla Mining, Newcrest Mining, and Sandfire Resources, focusing on mineral system modeling, geochemical halos, and ore genesis.
Key contributions include the 'Alteration Box Plot' method for VHMS systems and pioneering studies of hydrothermal breccias in epithermal gold deposits. His work bridges geological field studies with cutting-edge analytical methods, directly informing exploration strategies in diverse global settings.
