Bruce E. Cain is the Charles Louis Ducommun Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and Director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He holds affiliate roles as Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, SIEPR, and the Precourt Institute for Energy. Cain specializes in political regulation, democratic theory, state politics, and environmental governance. He earned his B.A. from Bowdoin College (1970), B.Phil. from Oxford University (1972 as a Rhodes Scholar), and Ph.D. from Harvard University (1976).
- Previous affiliations include Caltech (1976-89) and UC Berkeley (1989-2012), where he directed the Institute of Governmental Studies (1990-2007) and the UC Washington Center (2005-2012).
His research focuses on institutional design, election reform, climate adaptation policies, and collaborative governance. Notable contributions include studies on redistricting commissions, regulatory balance, and wildfire policy adoption. He has authored over 150 publications, including Democracy More or Less (2015), and co-edited volumes on American politics and environmental policy.
