Bruce Arnow, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, specializing in psychotherapy for depression, particularly chronic and treatment-resistant cases. He serves as a Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and a Member of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.

Dr. Arnow’s research focuses on treatment outcomes for major depression, mediators of therapeutic response, and the epidemiology of chronic pain and depression. He investigates relationships between child maltreatment and adult psychiatric sequelae, including healthcare utilization patterns. Recent work explores computational linguistics and AI in psychotherapy, analyzing therapist-patient language dynamics and automated feedback systems.
His publications span neuroimaging studies in PTSD, comparative effectiveness of ADM vs. psychotherapy, and AI-driven speech recognition in clinical settings. Awards include Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy (1996–present) and Fellow of the American Psychological Association’s Society of Clinical Psychology (2013–present).
Dr. Arnow teaches courses such as Directed Reading in Psychiatry and Medical Scholars Research. He directs the Psychosocial Treatment Clinic and holds leadership roles as Co-Chief of Adult Psychiatry & Clinical Psychology and Associate Chair in his department.
