Brooke Williams is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Computational Journalism at Boston University and a contributor to The Intercept. She specializes in data-driven investigative reporting focused on holding institutions accountable. At BU, she teaches data journalism and co-leads the interdisciplinary Justice Media co-Lab with Spark! and the Center for Data and Computing Sciences. Her students regularly publish work in the Boston Globe and national outlets.
Williams has won major awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting (2014), George Polk Award, and Gerald Loeb Award. Her career spans roles at The New York Times, Center for Public Integrity, San Diego Union-Tribune, and Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. Notable investigations include exposing defense contract abuses in Iraq/Afghanistan, corporate influence on think tanks, and prosecutorial misconduct. Current work includes a nationwide data-driven probe into federal prosecutors.
Education: Graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism (2001). Early career included photojournalism at The Maneater student newspaper and beat reporting at the Columbia Missourian.
Research emphasizes intersection of technology, ethics, and investigative storytelling. Collaborates across disciplines to address systemic accountability gaps. Advises students on publishing impactful work in traditional and digital platforms.
