Bronwen Forbay is an Associate Professor of Voice at Furman University (Greenville, SC) and a South African-American soprano with an international career. She holds a DMA in Voice Performance from the University of Cincinnati, CCM, and is the first South African woman to earn this degree. Her teaching roles include former positions at McLennan Community College (Waco, TX), Sam Houston State University, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, South Africa).
Education: B.Mus. (University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2000), M.Mus. (Manhattan School of Music, 2002), Artist Certificate (Southern Methodist University, 2004), DMA (UC-CCM, 2007).
Research focuses on Afrikaans Art Song literature, lyric diction across languages, and bel canto techniques. She co-authored Afrikaans Art Song Literature: Translation and Pronunciation Guide (Oxford UP, 2025) and published in the Journal of Singing. Her performance work bridges classical and modern repertoire, including roles in Mozart, Telemann, and world premieres like Wading Home.
Awards include the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award (2007), Fulbright Scholarship, and multiple competition prizes. She serves as President of Furman’s Black Faculty and Staff Association and Treasurer of South Africa’s NATS chapter.
Teaching highlights include mentoring students who’ve won TMTA, NATS, and Broadway roles. Her pedagogical focus on diction and performance authenticity reflects her dual expertise in vocal technique and cultural heritage.
