Brittnay Proctor-Habil is an Assistant Professor of Race and Media in the School of Media Studies at The New School. Her research focuses on performance, popular culture, and sound/visual culture at the intersection of blackness, gender, and sexuality. She authored Minnie Riperton’s Come to My Garden (2022) and is currently working on two book projects: one tracing Black Southern migration to California through sound, and another analyzing funk music’s gender and sexuality discourses via LP records and CDs.
Proctor-Habil holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and a B.A. from the University of California, Riverside. Her scholarly work spans platforms like Essence.com, Journal of Popular Music Studies, and ASAP/Journal. She teaches courses such as Black Feminist Media Methods and Blaxploitation Films, and supervises thesis projects. Her writing often intersects cultural critique, Black studies, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
