Brittany Chanell Johnson serves as Assistant Professor of Music - Ensembles & Academics, Voice at St. Mary's College of Maryland. A native of Augusta, Georgia with over 20 years of professional experience, she specializes in vocal performance, choral conducting, and music education with a focus on Black Artistry.
Her educational background includes degrees from Furman University and Florida State University. She has established herself as a prominent voice in music education and performance, with particular expertise in helping artists develop their vocal identity while remaining true to their cultural roots.
Johnson's research and professional interests center on Black Artistry in worship, performance techniques, and culturally responsive pedagogy. She approaches teaching with what she describes as 'discipline, encouragement, love, and enthusiasm,' connecting with artists on a personal level to shape them into skilled performers. Her work emphasizes vocal identity development that honors artists' origins and cultural backgrounds.
As a boundary breaker, Johnson holds several historic distinctions including being the first Black woman to lead the music and creative arts ministry at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC, and to music direct musicals at Howard University. She has also guest conducted The American Pops Orchestra, consistently focusing on 'collaboration while centering the singing voice' whether working with choirs, orchestras, or theatrical ensembles.
Johnson founded the OnStage Performing Arts Collective (OPAC) in 2017 as a performance-based training ground for young people interested in music, dance, and theater arts. Through OPAC and her university position, she has mentored numerous students who have gone on to appear on national and international stages. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes empowerment through 'rigorous training and real-world mentorship.'
She currently serves as director of the Music and Creative Arts Ministry at Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church and maintains an active performance schedule, including her current role as Sofia in ArtsCentric's production of The Color Purple through August 2025, and upcoming conducting engagements at St. Mary's College of Maryland through December 2025.
