Professor Briony Birdi is the Head of School and Professor of Library and Information Science at the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, University of Sheffield. She holds degrees from Hull, Sheffield, and professional certifications (MCLIP, Hon FCLIP). Her career includes roles as a Research Fellow, Research Associate, and academic staff member since 2003, with part-time work from 2009-2021 balancing family and career.
Her research focuses on public libraries, reading promotion, social justice, and diversity. Key projects include evaluating library services’ impact on marginalized groups, interlending practices, and LGBTQ+ and minority ethnic literature availability. She has secured funding from bodies like the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Teaching emphasizes public libraries’ societal roles, with contributions to engaged learning initiatives. Awards include the 2016 iSchools Dissertation Runner-Up and Teaching Excellence awards (2016, 2017). She chairs editorial boards for journals like Library Review and Public Library Quarterly, and advises on professional ethics through CILIP committees.
