Briony Hannell is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Manchester, affiliated with The Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on digital feminisms, gender relations, and youth cultures, particularly exploring how platforms like Tumblr shape feminist activism and anti-feminist discourse. She holds a PhD in Cultural Politics from the University of East Anglia (2021).
Her teaching spans sociology, media studies, and gender studies at multiple institutions, including the University of Sheffield and University of East Anglia. She has designed modules such as Qualitative Research Design and Methods and Media, Culture & Society. Hannell is an accredited Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and currently co-supervises a PhD student at the University of Sheffield.
Her research employs ethnographic methods, platform analysis, and digital tools like Gephi and NVivo. Notable outputs include her 2024 book Feminist Fandom: Media Fandom, Digital Feminisms, and Tumblr and articles on topics like Muslim girlhood and digital DIY citizenship. She frequently engages with media outlets such as BBC Radio and WIRED.
