Dr. Brian Whelan is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Western Carolina University's College of Business, within the School of Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Sport Management, and Hospitality and Tourism Management. Prior to academia, he held senior and executive-level roles in marketing, branding, corporate communications, public relations, and product management at global financial services firms like Barings. He currently serves as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Marketing Theory.
Dr. Whelan's education includes a Doctorate (DBA) in Marketing from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a Master of Science (MS) in Marketing from West Virginia University, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology from Hofstra University.
His research explores the intersection of branding and consumer behavior in the digital age. Central themes include how personal brand attachments and loyalty evolve amid technological shifts, with specific emphasis on social media's role in shaping brand attitudes among Gen Z and Millennials. He investigates brand personality, cultural factors, and the transformative potential of blockchain technology in marketing.
Recent articles highlight his expertise in blockchain-enabled marketing strategies, participatory design, and the digital transformation of brand engagement. He emphasizes bridging academic theory with practical application in his teaching, using real-world scenarios to connect classroom concepts with industry challenges.
As a graduate faculty member, Dr. Whelan teaches in the MBA program and advises students in these advanced studies. His editorial work reflects his commitment to advancing marketing theory through peer-reviewed discourse.
